Jose DevLog #4 - ChAoTic 🐱



What’s up everyone!
This week I updated a bunch of the UI and added the new catch screen for when you snag a cat. I set up the cat paw animations and created the Blueprint logic so when the lure overlaps with a paw, it switches from pawing to catching. I also added button click sounds, which I thought would add to the vibe of the game. I tried to add looping background music too, but that ended up being more of a process than I had time for, so I did not include it, but I think it would have helped a lot with pulling the game together.
There were a lot of hiccups this week, all the way up to the last minute. Getting the UI to behave was a whole learning experience. Everything worked inside Unreal, but once I packaged the game the UI would break. Turns out I was missing a couple of Blueprint references in the UI Blueprint, and I also did not realize I needed to list every map in the Project Settings so they actually get included when packaging. Love that for me. On the bright side, I definitely understand Unreal UI better now. I also made a logo for the game. It is not finished, but the idea is there.
The game is now packaged and available to download and play. It is not where I wanted it to be for this assignment, but I learned a lot in the process, especially about Unreal’s UI affordances. Maybe next time I will try a visual novel in Unreal, though I would need to make sure everything is anchored and responsive so the layout stays clean no matter the screen size.
After all that reeling, the catch might not be perfect, but it is definitely one I am keeping. 🐱🎣
